Meet Nancy Grigg, Volunteer

My name is Nancy Grigg, and I have been volunteering at StepUp Durham for one year. I first learned about StepUp when a neighbor invited me to a dessert party to hear Syretta, Executive Director for StepUp Durham, introduce the organization. I heard a compelling story about the great need in our community of job seekers with barriers like criminal background or gaps in work history, and the innovative, effective work of StepUp to provide support, preparation, and connections to these folks. It planted a seed in my heart that eventually led me to get involved with StepUp on many levels.
The Employment Readiness Workshop is where I first plugged in, and continue to engage, in the areas of resume writing and mock interviews. I also facilitate a module during the workshop with group exercises that create interactive learning opportunities. I enjoy these chances to meet people, hear their stories, and help them develop and practice skills for their next steps. Though we spend just a few hours together, I always come away with gratitude for the connections made and delight in the progress and growth that unfolds in that important week.
As a member of Blacknall Memorial Presbyterian Church, I have been very interested in making connections between church members and StepUp Durham. Our church supports StepUp financially, through prayer, and by providing space for the Employment Training workshop. This spring, Syretta Hill came to speak to the congregation which lead to many new connections: a new employer for StepUp graduates (Bull City Mini), a new community partner (Samaritan Health), new volunteers, and new individual donors.
I have enjoyed working on other projects around StepUp as well – periodic mailings, newsletter editing, and the annual Impact Luncheon. As of this June, I am also serving on the StepUp Durham Board. There, I get to be involved at a strategic level, to help propel growth and long term sustainability of the organization. StepUp Durham offers many ways to use my gifts and abilities to make an impact in the community I love, with a very great side benefit of being blessed by all the people involved.
