From Belize to New Beginnings: The Bradley Family’s Journey with StepUp Durham
When the Bradley family of four moved from Belize, they brought with them a shared determination to create a stable and secure life in Durham. Together, Melissa (mother), Roger (father), Alissa (daughter), and Antoine (son) signed up for StepUp Durham’s program and graduated from our Step1 career readiness training—each one committed to building a strong foundation for their future.
Melissa joined the BUILD apprenticeship at the West End Community Foundation (WECF) and quickly made an impression. What is typically a 12-week apprenticeship turned into a permanent role after just one week because they “loved her so much.” Soon after, Antoine was hired at WECF as a camp counselor, and Alissa found her dream job teaching art through the Durham Arts Council.
With their licenses secured, a car purchased, and a place to call their own, the Bradleys are making strides. Today, three family members are employed and participating in Step2 of our program, while both Antoine and Alissa prepare to begin classes at NCCU this month. Melissa is also pursuing her PhD in Language, Literacy, and Culture from Oklahoma State University, furthering her passion for education.
Roger continues to inspire us with his dedication, attending ENER-G sessions weekly and actively pursuing employment opportunities. Success Coaches Tanya, Kevin, Bill, and Keith are honored to walk alongside each Bradley family member as they work toward long-term job security and stability.
The Bradley family’s journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when opportunity, hard work, and community support come together.
