In life, few stories capture courage and resilience as clearly as Zhenghui Yu’s—though most at StepUp know him as Nathan.
Nathan’s journey began with significant challenges. After being forced to leave school and losing his student visa, he found himself at a crossroads. Rather than letting these setbacks define him, Nathan took a bold step forward and joined StepUp Durham to rebuild his path.
Jobs Week became a turning point. What could have been an intimidating experience—speaking up in a room full of strangers in a new country—Nathan turned into an opportunity. His willingness to share, listen, and grow inspired others in the group. It was here that his resilience began to shine, not just for himself but as a source of encouragement to those around him.
Soon after Jobs Week, Nathan secured his first job as a Personal Care Assistant with Right At Home. Not long after, he was offered an overnight position at the Carolina Living and Learning Center (CLLC), which allowed him to pursue nursing classes during the day. His thoughtfulness and dedication quickly left an impression—so much so that when StepUp connected with CLLC, their HR team’s response was, “Can you send me more Nathans?”
UPDATE
That was in 2023. Today, Nathan is celebrating over a year at CLLC. In that time, life has continued to bloom. He got married, and together he and his wife are working toward purchasing their first home. He is also pursuing CNA courses, bringing him closer to his dream of becoming a nurse.
What makes Nathan’s story even more inspiring is how he gives back. Both he and his wife now volunteer as Step2 co-partners, walking alongside others in their own journeys. His story has come full circle: once a participant searching for his own way forward, now a mentor helping others take their own bold steps.
At StepUp, we are proud of Nathan—not just for his achievements, but for the way he shares his story, his culture, and his friendship with our community. His journey reminds us that courage, resilience, and a willingness to give back can change everything.
