Leona’s Journey: A Welcoming Presence in Healthcare

After being laid off from a job she had held for years, Leona began applying for new roles. Most applications led only to automated “thank you for applying” responses. Then a relative told her about StepUp Durham and its help with résumés and mock interviews.

“I hadn’t interviewed in over 15 years,” Leona shared. “Workplace expectations had changed, and I needed help getting back up to speed.”

Through personalized coaching, Leona learned what employers were looking for and how to prepare for interviews with confidence. The position she holds today came from just her second interview after joining StepUp.

“Immediately after the interview, I knew I nailed it,” she said. “The chemistry was great, and the manager even told me to keep an eye out for an offer within 48 hours.”

Today, Leona is a welcoming presence at the front desk of Fishing Point Healthcare in East Durham. She greets visitors with warmth and kindness, helping people feel valued and supported as they seek care.

Recently, Leona gave Bill, her StepUp Durham Success Coach a tour of the growing facility, proudly introducing her colleagues and sharing the team’s commitment to comprehensive, affordable healthcare. Her enthusiasm for her work was clear.
