Step1 - Work
Our rapid reemployment program. Step1’s short-term goal is stable employment within 90days of when you sign up. Step1’s long-term goal is to see you in career-oriented employment at a livable wage.
ENER-G
ENER-G is your weekly connecting to community partners, your employment allies, and job leads. After enrolling in Step1, job seekers meet weekly on Tuesday mornings from 9-11a. Come ready to hone your skills, meeting amazing employers, network with partners, and build your community!

BUILD
What Is BUILD?
Apprenticeship pathways to permanent employment for participants in Step1. BUILD supports people with a skills gap or stigma preventing them from landing permanent employment.
+ BUILD stands for:
- Boost your skills
- Uplift your team
- Improve your company’s performance
- Launch your career
- Drive industry change
+ Logistics:
- BUILD placements last up to 12 weeks at up 16hrs/week
- StepUp Durham pays BUILD apprentices $15.00/hr for their work with the placement organization (BUILD apprentices submit their timesheets to StepUp Durham)
- BUILD placements receive their job description, duty, and on-site supervision from the placement organization
- If the BUILD apprentice is a good fit and the placement organization has hiring capacity, the BUILD apprentice would be given priority in hiring
Step2 - Grow
In Step2, you move beyond income stability to grow financial stability through match savings and budgeting skills; your community stability through your cohort and co-partner relationships; and your personal and professional skills stability through trainings on food, leadership, and relationships
Elevate
What Is Elevate?
Open to people enrolled in any of our Step1, Step2, or Step3 programs. Elevate gives participants the opportunity to take short-term courses that will help them fill in skill gaps that have been hindering them from gaining livable wage employment.

+ Requirements:
- Must be an active StepUp participant
- Must have stable employment (been on the job for at least 6 months) or income
- Must have stable housing
- Complete an application
+ Benefits:
- Certificate received from Durham Tech after course completion
- Monthly stipend, ranging from $125-$625, given for classes that are longer than 4 weeks based on income and household size
- Bonuses given for each milestone reached based on attendance and academics
StepUp Kidz
StepUp Kidz supports the children of Step2 parents as they develop their own financial stability and habits while also encouraging personal and academic well being and success
Supports children of parents (0-17) in Step2
+ offers:
- Free savings account
- $25 bonus per phase for doing things like: helping with chores, completing homework, taking care of siblings, playing outside, reading, and turning off screens for a set period
- Tutors to complete assignments while at Step2
- Supportive and fun activities (building puzzles, playing games, coloring and drawing)
- Report card bonuses
- Scholarships to partner activities such as Hope Reins
Excel
What Is Excel?
Durham’s Guaranteed Income Pilot or Excel. 109 formerly-incarcerated individuals have been randomly selected by the Center for Guaranteed Income in Pennsylvania to receive an unconditional, cash transfer of $600 per month. The pilot will last one year.
